The center cartouche of this spectacular design features the overlapping cameo profile portraits of Kings George V, Edward VIII and George VI, highlighted in 24-karat gold plating. The arms of the star shaped proof contain their royal cyphers or monograms. The reverse features a portrait of the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II,  with each arm of the star engraved with one of the four floral emblems of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom: the rose of England, thistle of Scotland, shamrock of Northern Ireland, and leek of Wales.

1936: The Year of Three Kings
Proving truth can be stranger than fiction, this glorious coin beautifully captures a year that reads like a novel! The twists and turns of this epic saga begin with King George V. After celebrating his Silver Jubilee in 1935, George V's long-declining health culminated in his death in January 1936. His eldest son, the Prince of Wales, ascended to the throne as King Edward VIII.
Edward had a charming personality and was widely known as a ladies man; he made no attempt to conceal his dalliances. While Prince of Wales, he engaged in a series of sexual affairs that worried both his father, King George V, and then-British prime minister Stanley Baldwin. He was a strong-willed character who wanted to rule the vast empire on his own terms. As king, he showed impatience with court protocol, and caused concern among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. As a result, his reign was not to last...
Edward was never officially crowned king, but he reigned as King of England for 11 months and 22 days. The first British king to voluntarily give up his throne, Edward VIII abdicated for the love of the American socialite and divorcée Wallace Simpson; the king, as head of the English Church, was not permitted to marry a divorced woman. This extraordinary event had far-reaching consequences, the most significant of which was the eventual ascension to the throne of his younger brother's daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, who reigns to this day!
Edward’s abdication left the Throne of England in the hands of his younger brother, the Duke of York. Britain’s third king in just 11 months, "Bertie" had spent his entire life in his older brother's shadow and had never expected to be king. In the mid-1920s, he had speech therapy for a stammer, which he learned to manage to some degree, as dramatized in the film
The King's Speech
. Bertie ascended to the Throne of England under the regnal name King George VI and became the third monarch of the House of Windsor.
A man of few words, George VI had acute sense of duty. During the Second World War, he and his family remained in London and were seen as sharing the hardships of the common people. As a result, his popularity as monarch soared. Buckingham Palace was bombed during the Blitz while both George and his Queen, Elizabeth, were in residence. In addition, his younger brother, the Duke of Kent, was killed in a plane crash while on active duty. George VI became known as a symbol of British determination to win the war. His reputation as one of Great Britain’s most capable monarchs continues to grow, though his greatest contribution to British history may well be his eldest daughter, who reigns into the 21st century as Queen Elizabeth II!
King Edward VIII and the Constitutional Crisis
Only months into King Edward's reign, a constitutional crisis was caused by his proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions opposed the marriage, arguing a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective queen consort. Additionally, such a marriage would have conflicted with Edward's status as titular head of the Church of England, which, at the time, disapproved of remarriage after divorce if a former spouse was still alive.
Edward knew the Baldwin government would resign if the marriage went ahead, which could have forced a general election and would have ruined his status as a politically neutral constitutional monarch. When it became apparent he could not marry Simpson and remain on the throne, he abdicated. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. With a reign of 326 days, Edward is the shortest-reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl drop earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank Broadley. Each arm of the star is engraved with one of the four floral emblems of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom: the rose of England; thistle of Scotland; shamrock of Northern Ireland; and leek of Wales. The legend ELIZABETH II, the date of issue and denomination also appear, while the legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated inside a luxurious clamshell-style presentation case, lined with black velvet and satin, and protected by an outer cardboard box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
