For your collection: a
Very Rare
"YELLOW Celluloid Handle w/ TRANSLUCENT Cracked Ice center"
WESTERN
STATES
hunting knife, with
"mirror-like"
fixed blade.
This antique
PAT. APPL'D FOR WESTERN
skinner knife includes its companion
BOY SCOUT leather sheath.
The hunting/skinning knife handle has
beautiful White underlying slabs
that are topped with
Yellow celluloid.
There is also a photo
of the
"
amber/brown Translucent
center"
of the vintage handle...
when held up to the light.
Note: The WESTERN Company's limited
"Two-way"
blade stamping
(on the blade center and by the guard)
indicates the knife was manufactured decades ago,
likely between
1928 and 1942.
Remember, “back in their day” these older knives were purchased to be used…
Not
collected, making this good condition difficult to find.
SIZE
:
The overall length is:
6 7/8
"
inches
The blade is approx
:
3 1/2"
inches
TRADEMARKS
:
Stamped on the Front side (left):
WESTERN
BOULDER COLORADO
WESTERN STATES
(is lightly stamped in block letters on the middle of the blade)
Stamped on the Back side (right):

APPL'D FOR
Note:
Knives made in
late 1931 and early 1932
were marked "Patent Applied For"
and sometimes (like this knife) with "Patent and Applied abbreviated"
HANDLE
:
T
his vintage
Western States
knife has
"Yellow Celluloid"
handle scales with
"W
hite" underneath the yellow cast of top
.
T
hese original scales are constructed from a long lasting
celluloid material
which was used in early U.S.A Western knife construction. The handle slabs are well secured with
4 metal pins
and the
knife has No looseness
.
The tang photo of the
stunning
"Amber /brown Translucent
center"
of the handle
when held up to the light...
shows a little crystallization, which is normal for being possibly 80 + years old.
The bright and varied materials in the
handle
spacers
are tight and
a
mazingly Well Preserved.
Some age-related
crazing has occurred on the yellow part of the handle scales,
more on one side than the other as can be seen in photos.
This
skinner knife fits well in hand and has an
oval cast Aluminum Pommel
and the
Half guard may be Nickel Silver.
(Please view photos for details)
This decades old Western States knife and companion Boy Scout sheath have been in my personal collection for years, and is now
ready for the next person to appreciate its rarity and charm.
BLADE
:
The
reflective
steel blade is straight
and there appears to be
No blade edge nicks.
This vintage blade is still
mirror-like
but has some signs of surface grinding or light surface scratches along with some tiny age specks or light patina, normal for the age. This early Western fixed blade has a long
false top blade edge
that could be sharpened if desired.
The companion
Boy Scouts of America
leather sheath
fits this knife like a glove and what good Boy Scout wouldn't have sharpened his knife?
This Western "cracked ice" style small game hunting / skinning knife feels balanced, heavy, and secure when held in your hand.
SHEATH
:
This knife comes with its companion
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERIC
A leather sheath that is in
Very Good vintage condition
. This is a
heavy-duty
sheath/case constructed of
3 layers
in the lower section.
The sheath/case shows some signs of handling or discoloring, and surface scuffs.
It has
great
intact stitching,
working fastening strap with metal snap,
metal rivets,
and
thick
belt slot
.
There is also a
stiff throat area
and
the "
Boy Scouts of America" round symbol tooling on the front
.
The well constructed
sheath appears
original to the knife and fits it like a glove
. It
measures 7 1/4" inches long and offers good protection for the knife while carrying.
This impressive antique knife will make a welcomed addition for the collector or outdoorsman in your family!
The
hunting knife has
a lot of character and vintage appeal....with that original “
patina of time"
appearance not yet achieved with newer knives.
