The Australian Koala is one of the many popular bullion and proof coin programs that features a common motif from one year to the next, but alters the image for a new look and increased demand. The latest Australian Koala silver coin design has captivated investors and collectors, and is now available in a high-relief striking.
A high-relief proof coin has the brilliant finish and collectability of a standard proof, with the added visual appeal of 3D shapes. The coins are struck multiple times with a die cast at the Perth Mint to create a 3D appearance for the koala design, while the background fields are sunken behind the image.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz Australian Koala Proof Silver Coin High Relief is the latest depiction of the continents native marsupial. In the image, a koala is featured sitting in the crook of a tree, with its gaze fixed on an unknown object in the distance. In the far background, the rolling hills of the Outback are visible.
The obverse side of the coin bears the effigy of Englands Queen Elizabeth II. She is featured in right-profile relief, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, and is surrounded by engravings that read (clockwise) Elizabeth II, Australia, and 1 Dollar.
The Perth Mint is Australias oldest operating facility, and was once part of Great Britains Royal Mint system on the continent that included facilities in Melbourne and Sydney. Though it is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint, the Perth Mints coins are considered legal tender in the country.
