Description

Dating to the 1880s, a this HTF beautiful Hampshire Pottery stein/mug has a cream body with the upper third and handle having a raised leaf and berry pattern in hues of green and golden browns done in a majolica glaze. The remains of gold trim at the rim and base are still present. The mug is 5 5/8" tall. Hampshire Pottery is highly desirable American art pottery, and this piece without and souvineing is a wonderful and unusual example.
Condition is very good. There is a small flaw on the 5th raised bump on the handle  - see photos. Fine crazing throughout.
The mug is signed in red with the Hampshire Pottery Keene, NH mark that also bears the signature of the James Scollay Taft. who founded the pottery in 1871. In 1879, English potter Thomas Stanley joined the pottery and developed the majolica glaze on this piece. We therefore estimate that this piece dates to the early 1880s.
