    Description
Handwritten Letter from a Woman in Meriden, CT. West Meriden, CT: 1860. Handwritten letter, 4pp, signed "Louise", dated 1860 at West Meriden, Connecticut. The author describes an outing to a local church--"Mrs. Hale & myself went & we had a nigger driver so you had better believe we went in style"--followed by a description of a lecture at the town hall by a Missionary from Illinois--it looked strange enough to see four or five ministers up on the stage with the scenery behind & the side views I expected to see them begin to perform...There are churches of almost every denomination here and I am going to try them all..." The rest of the letter discusses outbreaks of sickness among friends and family. Together with a 2 page fragment of another letter sent from Louisa detailing her anxieties about a friendship with a married man who told her "you cannot know Louise how very much I think of you & I believe my wife joins with me we can scarcely speak of Lou but thoughts of ? come if therefore I seem too interested in you attribute it to the night-cause." Letter in very good condition with folding creases.  [7611]
